More filters. Sort order. This is very well researched book. It gives a fair account for the origin and evolutions of Islamic jurisprudence. I was happy to see balanced view written by an orientalist.
I read most of its chapters, but its worth reading the whole book especially for non Arabic speakers. Sharia for Muslims includes religious law, along with social norms and practices. Regarding the role of Ulema and scholars in Pakistan, he claims that there are several issues. An example of that would be the Taliban who belong to the Deobandi school of thought, quite often reject the verdicts of Deobandi scholars. Hence you can see that there is no authority there since a Fatwa is non-binding. Another issue is that clerics belonging to different religious schools of thought adopt extremely derogatory attitudes towards each other.
As a result, it is extremely difficult to bring these groups together for a discussion relating to issues that are plaguing Pakistan.
